The Falling in Love necklace features a fused glass pendant measuring about an inch long. The pendant comes to you mounted on a sterling silver bail and strung on a fine 16" silver ball chain. Since no two pendants are alike, your pendant will look similar to those in the photos but will still remain a wonderful surprise until it is delivered to you! I create each piece by cutting up panels of colorful glass, creating a design and then firing it in a kiln for several hours at a high temperature. This combination of time and temperature fuses the glass into something special.

The first ever Renegade Craft Fair in LOS ANGELES will take place JULY 11 + 12 from 11am – 7pm, at the California Market Center.

Over 200 artists are traveling from all over the country and abroad to participate and sell their handmade goods at Renegade Craft Fair – Los Angeles. From clothing and accessories, to stationary and concert posters, with everything from bath products and ceramics in between – there’s surely something for everyone! Be sure to check out our artist page to start working on your wish list.

The most exciting contemporary crafts organizations from across the LA area will be on site hosting interactive workshops and demonstrations. Silver Lake-based ReForm School is offering hands-on lessons in linoleum block-printing both days of the Fair, and The Urban Craft Center of Santa Monica will be leading workshops in zine-making and needle-felting on Saturday, July 11. Clean out your closets before heading to the Fair on Saturday, July 11, as Swap-O-Rama-Rama will be in full swing that day – transforming your discarded clothes into one-of-a-kind, recycled creations!

The Urban Craft Center in Santa Monica

I'm finally just about finished renovating my new studio in East Los Angeles...I'll be sharing pics soon:) I feel so lucky to have a space dedicated to crafting since space can be a rare thing in a city. We crafters need room to spread out and get it done! If your lacking in the space department, maybe The Urban Craft Center can help you. From the U.C.C. website: "The Urban Craft Center is communal creative space, a gathering spot for crafty types of all sorts, with the tools and the space to facilitate your creative process. Our space is bright and lofty, with lots of tables and seating, and with different working areas to choose from. Lockers are also available for storing your projects and personal materials. Come in and check out the arty vibe. Take a moment to get inspired, either from the extensive craft book library, or from what’s being created by your fellow artists."

CRAFT: Volume 10 is our last issue in print

Two and a half years ago, inspired by the DIY creativity of a growing number of indie crafters, we launched CRAFT Magazine along with its companion website, Craftzine.com. Since then, we've become an integral part of the new craft community. We've been fully committed to encouraging more people to discover the joy of crafting.

All along, we have noticed that Craftzine.com has been growing steadily. At the same time, we've come to realize that there were more and more challenges in publishing CRAFT as a print magazine, especially with the costs of print and distribution rising, and diminishing interest among advertisers in print. So we've decided that Volume 10, our Celebrate Like Crazy issue, will be our last print issue and that the future of CRAFT is online. (CRAFT subscribers will be notified by email today of the changes and how to obtain a refund for their subscription. If we don't have your email, we will be sending you a letter by post.)

Creating a print magazine was a great pleasure for all of us on our amazing team, and we've appreciated the many readers who told us how much they enjoyed CRAFT. Our print magazine helped to gain recognition that craft is thriving today, more than ever. We're going online exclusively with CRAFT because that's where we can best reach and serve our audience.

On Craftzine.com, we have a talented team, led by Natalie Zee Drieu, who is returning from maternity leave. She's excited to expand our efforts online. We have a lot of work to do to bring the best of the magazine to the website but the team has started to pursue that goal. We will focus on bringing you more craft projects, just as the print magazine did but we'll be able to do so with greater frequency. We want CRAFT online to be visually appealing and easily accessible; we want it to be fun but also useful. CRAFT will continue to venture into new territory, creating projects that integrate high tech wizardry and high fashion.

I also want to assure you that craft and crafters will continue to be an important part of the program for Maker Faire. We have always regarded crafters as we do makers, a creative vanguard who are remaking the world in ways that are especially vital today. Also, we will continue to publish MAKE magazine in print. The closure of CRAFT in print allows us to focus our limited resources on growing a single DIY magazine instead of two.

As we've talked to some of CRAFT's contributors and advertisers about our decision, we felt that they understood why we made the decision. Nonetheless, the initial reaction is one of disappointment. I suspect many subscribers will feel the same way. However, as we talked about the future with all these stakeholders, they also became as excited as we are about the possibilities. I look forward to exploring what lies ahead. I hope you will join us as we share our deep interest in, and appreciation for, the diverse approaches to CRAFT on craftzine.com.

R.I.P. Lux Interior

Lux Interior, the founding member of garage punk band the Cramps, has died aged 62. Interior, whose real name was Erick Lee Purkhiser, passed away on 4 February at Glendale Memorial Hospital in California. He had suffered from a previously existing heart condition.

Interior was the theatrical, macabre frontman of cult punk-rock group the Cramps. He founded the band in 1973 with his wife, Poison Ivy, whose real name is Kristy Wallace, and quickly became a staple of the New York punk scene. The band's music fused their love of horror B-movies with rockabilly and surf rock, and their influence can be heard in bands such as the White Stripes, My Bloody Valentine and the Horrors.

The Cramps recorded their debut EP, Gravest Hits, in 1979 and continued touring and recording, albeit with a revolving lineup, until 2004. Interior and Poison Ivy were the only constant members of the group. They were notorious for their flamboyant, fetishistic live shows, and once infamously played a show for patients at Napa State Mental Hospital in Sacramento.

False rumours that Interior had died of a heroin overdose circulated in 1987, with fans sending wreaths to his home after hearing the news. "At first, I thought it was kind of funny, but then it started to give me a creepy feeling," the singer told the Los Angeles Times. "We sell a lot of records, but somehow just hearing that you've sold so many records doesn't hit you quite as much as when a lot of people call you up and are obviously really broken-up because you've died."

Sadly, a statement confirming his death earlier this week is no hoax. He is survived by Wallace, his wife of 37 years. A statement from the Cramps' media representatives reads: "Lux has been an inspiration and influence to millions of artists and fans around the world. He and wife Poison Ivy's contributions with the Cramps have had an immeasurable impact on modern music. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly."

Indie 103.1 is dead! R.I.P.

After a little more than five years on the air Indie 103.1 is going off the air! You'll soon find Cumbia when you tune in to 103.1 and hey, I like Cumbia but I LOVED Indie. Such a sad day. From the Indie 103.1 website:

Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option — to play the corporate radio game.

The Peel Here Art Show is an Adhesive Art exhibition focused on the evolving art of STICKERS, and their affect on the urban landscape. Each year we showcase work by talented street artists, illustrators and designers; AKA "Sticker-Heads". Each artist possesses a unique approach to the art form. "Sticker-Heads" are producing stickers in their bedrooms, garages and studios - freehand, stencils, silkscreens, digitals. They are young and old on every continent and linked into a global network, trading tangable commodities - STICKERS. Sticker-trades turn at a remarkable rate worldwide - from places like Berlin to Phoenix, Los Angeles to Tel-Aviv, or Capetown to Vancouver. You see these creations slapped on bus benches, telephone poles, newspaper stands, electrical power boxes, etc. What you may not realize is, a good amount of those stickers on your street corner were probably made by someone on the other side of the world.

Today's sticker-trading can be compared to the 'pen pal' era of the 20th century. Sticker-heads around the world make stickers and mail them to friends they met on blogger websites. Nothing more elating than receiving an envelope full of hand make stickers made by a friend from another country, OR better yet, to see a photo on the web of your sticker on a street sign in a foreign city. The internet and digital photography have catapulted this subculture to where it is today.

Just recently during the presidential campain, we witnessed how stickers affect the way we communicate. Shepard Fairey's - Barak Obama "HOPE" image, was very effective in conveying a message to the masses. It communicated that the 2008 presidential campaign was important and that young people could really make a difference by participating. It reminded the masses of their discontentment with the exisiting administration and change was personified by the image of the Jr Senator from Illinois. Truely, this image will be a key reference for art historians, if not already.

The Basics
Your products cannot be made with purchased patterns, molds or kits. You must live in North America, and you must be the designer, creator and/or producer of your products. You must be able to move-in and set-up on Friday December 12 and sell for the entire show, 11am-7pm December 13th & 14th.

Deadline
The application deadline is midnight November 2nd 2008.

Special Collections and Student Criteria
If you opt to be included in one of the “special collection” areas, your products must actually fit into the theme (i.e Green Room products must be eco-friendly). If accepted, Rising Stars (students) must provide documentation that they are a student in a fine arts/design program at an accredited college in California. There are 10 Rising Star spots available.

Group Applications
Up to 2 vendors can share a booth, but only one application is needed. If you are accepted, the second vendor will get instructions for emailing his/her logo, bio description and 3 photos.

Stores, Art Galleries and Small Businesses
UNIQUE LOS ANGELES does consider LA-area merchants (and in fact features an area called “Indie Lane” as a special collection at the event), but they must sell and support independent and local products.

Application and Vendor Payment
Your total payment (vendor payment + $10 non-refundable application fee) must be completed during the application process, through PayPal.
Depending on what size booth you choose (and if you are a student), your application payment will be:
$230 (Rising Star, student 10X10 booth + $10 fee)
$330 (10X10 booth + $10 fee)
$530 (10X20 booth + $10 fee)

What You Get
The event is held in a weather-proof indoors environment. Each booth includes the solid wall structure, 1 table, 2 chairs, and a wastebasket. Your booth will be either 10X10 or 10X20, and features professional overhead spot lighting. You will get an Online Profile, a listing in the event guide, and more (please see the vendor packet PDF online).

Acceptance
Vendor applications will be reviewed by a jury during the first week of November. All applicants will be notified regarding the status of their application by November 7th 2008. If you are accepted, you will receive a vendor packet with detailed information, including the option to rent shelves/brackets, advertise, hire a PR rep and more.

Dia de los Muertos Exhibition @ ChimMaya, East L.A.

Outside, strains of Spanish radio flitted through the quiet neighborhood where residents walked their dogs and practiced skateboarding tricks.

But inside ChimMaya, a small corner boutique and rising art gallery nestled along the border of East Los Angeles, Montebello and Monterey Park, more than 60 artists and self-professed "art fans" chatted, shopped and snacked against a backdrop of purple and green walls, lively salsa music and paintings of dancing skeletons.

The Sunday opening of ChimMaya's third annual Dia de los Muertos exhibit drew artists and patrons from across the Southwest, to an area far from the more established art scenes of Pasadena and Santa Monica.

ChimMaya -- a literary hybrid of Chimayo, a holy area in New Mexico, and Maya, the surname of co-owner Steven Acevedo's niece and nephew -- opened in 2004 as a purse-and-jewelry boutique, and quickly became a spot frequented by local artists and art patrons. The store recently added two rooms and a patio.

The expansion of art space in East L.A. is helping to dispel the myth that businesses and galleries can't survive on the Eastside, Acevedo said.

"We're trying to bring the level of artwork, merchandise and atmosphere up in this side of town," he said. "I grew up three miles away, and I know what it's like to have to go outside the community when you want to see art. If you were an artist who lived a block from here and you wanted to have your work seen, you'd have to take it outside the community -- Pasadena, Orange County, Santa Monica. . . . I wanted to bring it to my community."

Sunday marked the kickoff of the three-week-long Dia de los Muertos exhibit, which features about 75 pieces from 31 artists. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday honoring family and friends who have died, usually celebrated Nov. 1 or Nov. 2. At the heart of the exhibit stands an altar of tissue-paper marigolds, ceramic doves and statues of the Virgin Mary, created by local artist Ofelia Esparza.

Having art space in East L.A. is attracting wealthier art collectors, as well as locals thirsty for a place to explore what's new on the art scene, said George Yepes, a veteran artist who has been showing his work at ChimMaya for two months.

"A lot of families that grew up here moved to Diamond Bar, Hacienda Heights. They're not going to drive to Santa Monica. They can come to East L.A., hit the restaurants and have somewhere to stop by and look at what's new, what's hot in art."

Yepes, an East L.A. native, has worked as an artist for 35 years, often painting abroad. For him, coming to ChimMaya is "like coming home again. I've painted in Barcelona, Madrid, London, Paris, and now I get to come back and bring my art back to the Eastside.

"Our community really deserves to have a space like this," said Monica Lugo, 49, a doctor who grew up in East L.A. "It's validating to see artwork with characters who look like my family. You see someone who could be your grandma," she said, gesturing to a painting of an elderly woman holding a candle, her head draped in blue cloth.

"It depicts a lot of our culture, so we can relate," said Paulina Palomino, 43, who also grew up in East L.A. "There was a time, when I was growing up, that you couldn't find something like this in a gallery."

The Folk Tree from October 4 - November 2, 2008. The show features traditional
and other altars as well as work by local artists and Mexican folk art commemorating
this major holiday. The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, October 4,
from 2 - 6 P.M.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which falls on November 1 and 2, is a Mexican holiday honoring the dead. Ritualized worship of the dead has been practiced in Mexico since at least 1800 B.C. The modern holiday is a combination of pre-Hispanic and Catholic influences. Day of the Dead participants prepare elaborate feasts and create altars paying homage to the dead, and they indulge in festive celebrations of life and its aftermath. A time of reflection as well, the holiday has inspired a rich folk art tradition.

In honor of these dates, The Folk Tree annually invites area artists to assemble altars for people or events of significance to them. Highly personal, these altars often include photographs and other mementos, letters, candles and offerings of food. In addition to lost loved ones, in the past artists have created altars for victims of tragedies and violence, for well-known figures who have died, as well as for family pets.

Several artists have participated regularly over the years. Carolyn Potter, who pays homage to family members, has been a participant since the exhibit's inception and incorporates her gourd and polymer clay art into her altar. Johanna Hansen uses her painted narrative ceramics in altars commemorating her son and mother. Nancy Ann Jones' altar is interactive - visitors are invited to write their own messages and tributes. And once again this year, a Spanish class from the Sequoyah School in Pasadena led by their teacher, Michelle Milner, will create a group altar. Related artwork and objects are on view, including pieces by Abel Alejandre, Mary Clark Camargo, Sandra Gallegos,
Kio Griffith, Robert Llanos, and Miguel Angel Murillo. Day of the Dead themed jewelry by Alba Dandridge, Lucia Preciado, Lisa Rocha, and Lacey Waddell is also on view.

Mexican folk art objects created for the Day of the Dead are sold in the streets throughout Mexico in the weeks preceding the holiday. Many examples of these items are available at The Folk Tree. They are often made of clay, papier maché, tin and sugar. Those forms most commonly found are skeletons and skulls, often decorated to include a person's name, or placed in little vignettes. Mexico's artists express their creativity in various media in wonderfully humorous ways.

Founded by jewelry designers Sandy Collins, Amanda Lockrow and Heather Palleiko, The SoCal Bench Project is a group of California artisans who have come together to create positive change in our local community. They host an annual event working with a non-profit organization that directly benefits the members of our community who need assistance.

This year they are working with the Los Angeles, CA based non-profit organization New Directions Inc. which provides a wide variety of services for homeless veterans, including job training and placement, parenting and money management classes, legal and financial assistance, counseling, remedial education and resources for alumni. Our local community has a huge population of homeless veterans. With the current wars and the state of our military it is imperative that we support those who have fought for our county. Right here in our backyard we have numerous veterans who simply need medication, counseling and someone to show that they care.

The event is taking place on August 9, 2008 9:30am-3:00pm rain or shine at the Veteran's Memorial Center in Culver City, CA. Featuring thirty artisans from the contemporary craft, fine art, gifts, home and garden, jewelry and photography fields, there is something for everyone! FREE admission and FREE parking are just the beginning. There will be a raffle with some amazing prizes as well as music and food. Sales Tax Tips from the L.A. Craft Mafia

Hey crafty business owners, sales tax time is HERE! Here are some tips for filing sales tax.

I just efiled here: http://boe.ca.gov/elecsrv/eServices.htm

You can also do it by form (which they should have already sent you).

Most of it is self explanatory, but here are some helpful things that I have discovered:

-If you are doing temporary sales, download form 530-B and keep it attached to your sales permit. When you sell at craft fairs or flea markets and you don't have a permit with that address on it, you are required to fill out the location information on this form and keep it with you for the event.

-Also, if you sell your craft to other resellers (like a store) you are not responsible for paying the sales tax on it as long as you get their information. A good form to use to keep there info is the BOE 230. You need this information in case you get audited. You are also responsible for making sure the seller's permit number is valid.

-Be sure to always keep good records! It will make your life so much easier when you go to pay your taxes. I have an excel sheet that I update after my craft fairs.

- When I have questions, I call up the information line listed on the tax form. I have found everyone that I've talked to enormously helpful.

What crafty chick doesn't love the Golden Girls? I've been a huge fan since I was a kid in the 80's when it was still on NBC. I think I was about 9 years old and I remember that my mother thought the shows dialogue was too racey for a kid my age. All that sex talk! I recall falling in love with the intelligence and sass of the show. It's now more than 20 years later and I still watch the show in syndication. I even own the DVDs. I have DEEP GG's love and I know I always will.

Estelle Getty passed away in her Los Angeles home at 5:35 A.M. this morning. She was 84.

The crafty world has been busy. I was selling at Renengade Craft fair last week and it was GREAT! Sales were incredible and I saw lots of friends and made a bunch of new ones...I’d like to share some craft gossip with you:

All proceeds will go towards production costs for Handmade Nation. Winning bidders will need to be present to purchase artwork which will be taken home at the end of the event, cash and credit cards accepted. L.A. Craft Mafia learns to screen print

We recently decided that we'd learn to screen print so that we could offer up our logo at the recent Swap-O-Rama-Rama that took place on June 28th. Yup, people could choose to adorn their new found clothes with our logo! We decided that we'd burn our own screen for printing and have a crafty brunch at my house while we were at it. We snacked, had drinks, purchased a Speedball brand screen printing kit, applied photo emulsion to the screen, hit the screen with our acetate transfers, burned the image into the screen for an hour in my closet, rinsed, dried and started our test prints.

Ashley Goldberg's work is simple, sweet and quirky all at once. You can't help but fall in love the characters that she creates in such a soothing color palette. Here's what she says about her work: "I have loved arts, crafts, creatures, and nature my entire life. I enjoy focusing on portraiture and capturing a brief moment in time. My artwork tends to be simple, but with a sophisticated or stark color palette. I believe great emotion can be conveyed in a simple gesture or look. The characters I create, whether monsters or little girls, are simple, humorous, empathetic, and a little bit pathetic. I strongly believe in what you're happiest doing at five is what you will be happiest doing your entire life. Christine Street is an L.A. based jewelry designer that creates sweet silver jewelry under her company Chocolate and Steel. Her work includes images based on her own original illustrations. Here's more about her work:
"I specialize in fine silver jewelry that uses reclaimed silver. Most of my pieces are created using PMC (precious metal clay). PMC uses silver that is reclaimed from film negatives and x-rays. That silver is ground to a powder and mixed with an organic binder that makes is malleable like clay. So, when I work with it it is in clay form. After I have created something wonderful for you I fire the piece in a kiln and the organic binder burns away completely and what is left is just the pure silver. MAGIC – wha-la! The final piece is polished, oxidized, brushed, and so on and so forth.

With metal clay I am able to translate my organic inspirations onto an industrial material. So goes the name "Chocolate and Steel"...the combination of organic and industrial, soft and strong, sweet and solid. Now an independent designer living in Los Angeles, I wake to discover new inspirations everyday. I will be forever grateful for this opportunity to do what I love. I have many hobby-like activities, but creating jewelry is my passion. "

Beer, Bread and Laughter

When I had the chance to leave L.A. over this holiday weekend, I took it! My guy and I hopped into the car and headed north dragging along my brother, who is always good for lots of laughs. Our destination was the San Francisco Bay area. Since my guys grandmother lives there it was a great chance to visit family. We used to live in Berkeley, so it was also a great chance to see old friends and visit our favorite haunts. We drank beer at Triple Rock in Berekley and Rogue Public House in San Francisco. We all ate like pigs and had a great time. We even managed to get in some excercise. I miss living in a city where EVERYONE loves to eat! Here are a few pics of how it went down.

"Inspired by her grandmother Ruby Leach; Amber Pratt, founder and designer, decided to follow in Ruby's footsteps by creating an apron line for fashion minded women.

Amber is alumni of Los Angeles Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising '03. Since then she has worked in design for notable sportswear and dress companies where she learned high standards for quality and integrity of work.

Aside from her passion for fashion, Amber spends considerable time in the kitchen making wedding cakes and pastries for friends. "I was taught to always wear an apron, even to do household chores!" With this in mind, Amber knew she had a market. "Everything in the home has become so new and contemporary, why not aprons?"

City Girl Aprons is a tribute to Amber's great grandmother Ruby Leach, whose line for fancy hostess aprons durring the 50's were very poplular. Thanks to Ruby's passion for sewing and contant apron wearing, generations later in '07, City Girl Aprons was born.

Amber felt desperate for something that would be flattering over her urban uniform of skinny jeans and tops and still be functional. Unlike Ruby's aprons however, City Girl Aprons are intended for the 21st century woman. "There is never an excuse to not be chic and on trend."

"Tosca Hidalgo y Terán is an artist whose scope of work spans the disciplines of goldsmithing, interactive media, flameworking, performance and multimedia installation.
Tosca draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources including but not limited to the fantastic vision of 19th century naturalist Ernst Haeckel, 21st century transhumanists, ancient myths, science fiction, Buckminster Fuller, the depths of the ocean and the far reaches of outer space.
Shunning labels, she was named one of Taos’ next generation of artists by the Harwood museum (1997-98) for her jewellery work which is frequently curated as small scale sculptures.

The Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present the Los de Abajo Printmaking Collective in an exhibition of experimental prints. In Drawing the Line, the Collective merges the centuries-old medium of printmaking with non-traditional media. Their groundbreaking techniques challenge traditional conceptions of printmaking.

Each of our artists is enamored of line. At times playful, the lines Kay Brown and Emelda Gutierrez utilize takes the edge off misfortune, drawing us into a whimsical world. While Judith Durán juxtaposes the celestial with the emotional, questioning our capacity to admire or feel, José Lozano discusses hidden demarcations, uncomfortable feelings, unease, and desconfiansa. Chie Izuma finds the natural formation of line in our bodies to be of utmost interest. Her imaginative combination of clay with paper identifies the organic lines surrounding us. Antonio Escalante, Poli Marichal, Don Newton and Mariana Sadowsky look at line through political eyes, speaking, respectively, to the US/Mexican border; the environment; political line; and line as an absurd division in landscape. Sojin Kim speaks metaphorically about drawing lines to distinguish us from others. Victor Rojas is concerned with how divisions in our mind create social divisions.

Drawing the Line is indicative of this group's determination to experiment and take printmaking towards a more provocative direction. Please join us.

The one day festival is open to student filmmakers in the Los Angeles area to screen their work in a community environment. The Claremont Museum of Art is pleased to present Vexing: Female Voices from East LA Punk from May 18 to August 31, 2008. The Museum will host an opening reception at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 17th, with live performances by Vexing artists Teresa Covarrubias, Angela Vogel, Lysa Flores and Alice Bag (Museum Member’s reception begins at 6 p.m.).

The burgeoning punk rock music scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s in East Los Angeles provided an electrically charged, creative climate. This scene created an atmosphere where performance mixed with poetry, and visual culture was defined by an aesthetic and an attitude. Artists and musicians interfaced and blurred the lines of actions, documentation, photography, sound and style. Taking its name from the all-ages music club The Vex, once housed within East Los Angeles’ Self Help Graphics and Art, Vexing is an historical investigation of the women who were at the forefront of this movement of experimentation in music, art, culture and politics, while exploring their lasting legacies and contemporary practices. This documentary-style exhibition will include photo, video and audio archives of the era as well as studio work encompassing painting, installation, writings and performance.

In an artistic environment fueled by exchange and experimentation, music played a pivotal role in defining new images of self. This exhibition documents a vital moment of artistic and musical interchange in Los Angeles, with women staking out a position between and within punk rock, East LA and the downtown art scene. Vexing not only considers their significant contributions to the cultural landscape of LA, but also examines the multiple scenes and identities they negotiated. These women have also served as a model for subsequent generations interested in alternative social movements as a platform of expression, as well as the post-identity conceptual practices of today.

Participants include musicians Alice Bag, Teresa Covarrubias, Angela Vogel, Monica Flores, musician and artist Exene Cervenka, artists Diane Gamboa and Patssi Valdez, photographers Dawn Wirth, Louis Jacinto, Linda Posnick and Frank Gargani, recording label founder of Fatima Records Yolanda Comparan Ferrer, printmakers Richard Duardo, Jessee Vidaurre and John Miner, and filmmaker Jimmy Mendiola. Representing a newer generation of artistic producers influenced by these women are musician/artist Lysa Flores, artists Shizu Saldamando and Sandra de la Loza, photographer Chris TV, performance group Butchlalis de Panochtitlan, and bands The Sirens and Go Betty Go. Vexing also includes special concert footage and interviews courtesy of Pete Galindo, Willie Herrón and Lysa Flores from the forthcoming documentary on The Vex, and an excerpt from the forthcoming documentary “Eastside Punks” by Jimmy Alvarado, Pat Perez and Jake Smith.

Research and reproduction support provided by the Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA. This exhibition is co-curated by Pilar Tompkins and Colin Gunckel. A catalog will accompany the exhibition, with essays by Josh Kun, Michelle Habell-Pallán, Isabel Castro-Melendez, Colin Gunckel and Pilar Tompkins.
